How it works
This calculator turns a step count into distance and an energy estimate. Distance is simply steps times stride length, and the calorie figure scales with both step count and body weight, since a heavier body costs more to move. Stride length is the input that matters most. It runs roughly 0.4 to 0.45 times your height for walking, so about 70–75 cm for a 170 cm person — but it lengthens when you walk fast and shortens uphill. Measuring your own is easy: walk ten steps, measure the total, divide by ten. The calorie result is a rough estimate. Terrain, pace, fitness and whether you are carrying anything all shift it, and part of that energy you would have spent at rest anyway. Use it to compare days against each other, not as a precise ledger.

Frequently asked questions
How far is 10,000 steps?
Around 7–8 km for an average stride — the exact figure depends on your stride length.
How are calories estimated?
From step count and body weight; it is an estimate, as terrain and pace also matter.
Where does the 10,000-step goal come from?
From marketing, not medicine. A Japanese pedometer launched in the 1960s was named "manpo-kei" — the 10,000-step meter — and the round number stuck. Research since finds real health gains well below it, with benefits accumulating from around 4,000 steps upward.
