How it works
Body Mass Index divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. It was designed as a quick screening tool for large populations, and doctors still use it as a first indicator of underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obesity. For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. Below 18.5 suggests underweight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obesity. These thresholds are the same for men and women, although body composition differs between the sexes. BMI has real limits: it cannot tell muscle from fat, so a muscular athlete may score as 'overweight' while being very lean, and it is not designed for children, pregnant women or the very elderly. Treat it as a starting point and combine it with waist measurement, body-fat percentage and medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. Below 18.5 is underweight, and 25 or above is overweight.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful screening tool but doesn't measure body fat directly. Very muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat.
Is BMI the same for men and women?
The formula and thresholds are identical, but women naturally carry more body fat than men at the same BMI — which is why complementary measures like waist circumference help.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the healthy range?
Do not panic over one number. Check the trend over time, measure your waist, and talk to a health professional before changing diet or training.
