How it works

Pace = Time ÷ Distance · Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Running pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance — usually minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. It is the inverse of speed: where speed asks 'how far per hour', pace asks 'how long per km'. This calculator turns your time and distance into a pace. Runners think in pace because it maps directly to a race plan. If you can hold 5:00 per km, a 10 km race takes 50 minutes and a half-marathon about 1h45. Pacing evenly is the classic way to avoid starting too fast and fading. A lower pace number means you are faster — 4:30/km is quicker than 5:30/km. To convert between metric and imperial, one mile is 1.609 km, so multiply a per-km pace by 1.609 to get per-mile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pace and speed?

They are inverses. Speed is distance per unit time (km/h); pace is time per unit distance (min/km). Pace is handier for planning races.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply your per-kilometre pace by 1.609, since a mile is 1.609 km. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03 per mile.

Is a lower pace better?

Yes. A lower time-per-distance means you are running faster — 4:30/km is faster than 5:00/km.
