How it works
This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method: body-fat percentage estimated from height and a few tape measurements — neck and waist for men, with hips added for women. It needs nothing but a tape measure, which is why it spread so widely. Those sites are chosen because fat distribution correlates with them. The formula was fitted on a large population, so it works reasonably on average bodies and drifts on unusual ones — very muscular necks or unusual proportions can throw it off by several points. As commonly cited healthy ranges: roughly 8–19% for men and 21–32% for women, with athletes below and health risk rising above. Measure at the same time of day, on bare skin, with the tape snug but not compressing — consistency matters more than absolute accuracy, because the trend over weeks is the useful signal.

Frequently asked questions
How is body fat percentage estimated?
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy method, based on your height and circumference measurements (neck, waist, and hips for women).
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Roughly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women is generally considered healthy, but it varies with age and fitness. It's an estimate, not a medical measurement.
Why does this differ from my bathroom scale?
They measure different things by different means. Impedance scales send a small current through the body and are sensitive to hydration, food and even foot moisture; the tape method reads shape. Both are estimates — pick one and track it, rather than comparing across methods.
