How it works

≈ 1.036 kcal × body weight (kg) × distance (km)

This calculator estimates how many calories you burn on a run from your body weight and the distance covered. Running cost is closely tied to how much mass you move and how far you move it, which is why weight and distance are the main drivers. A widely used rule of thumb is roughly 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per kilometre. A 70 kg runner covering 10 km therefore burns in the region of 700 calories — heavier runners and longer distances burn more. This is an estimate of gross calories. Terrain, wind, running economy and fitness all shift the real figure, and some of those calories you would have burned at rest anyway. Treat it as a useful ballpark for planning fuelling and weight goals, not a precise measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories do I burn per kilometre?

A common estimate is about 1 calorie per kg of body weight per km, so a 70 kg runner burns roughly 70 calories per km.

Does running pace change calories burned?

Distance and body weight dominate the total. Pace has a smaller effect — running faster burns a bit more per minute but you finish sooner, so the per-kilometre cost stays similar.

Is this gross or net calories?

It is a gross estimate. A portion of it is energy you would have used at rest anyway, so the extra calories from running are slightly lower.
