How it works
The Devine formula, used here, starts from a base weight at 152 cm and adds 2.3 kg for every additional inch of height, with a lower base for women than men. It also reports the healthy weight range for your height. It was never designed as a life goal. Devine was published in 1974 to calculate drug dosages, and it spread into fitness culture by accident. Several rival formulas — Robinson, Miller, Hamwi — give answers differing by several kilograms for the same person, which alone shows no single number is authoritative. The deeper limit is that height and sex cannot describe a body. Frame size, muscle mass, age and fat distribution all matter, and a range is far more honest than a point. Treat the figure as the centre of a wide reasonable zone, not a target to hit.

Frequently asked questions
How is ideal weight calculated?
This uses the Devine formula, based on your height and sex. We also show a healthy range from a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
Is there a single 'ideal' weight?
No — it's a guide. Healthy weight is a range and depends on muscle, frame and age, not just height.
Why do these formulas ignore muscle?
Because they only take height and sex as inputs. A muscular athlete can weigh well above the "ideal" while carrying little fat, which is why body composition measures like body-fat percentage tell you far more than a weight target does.
