How it works
This calculator uses the MET system: calories ≈ MET × body weight in kilograms × hours of activity. Walking briskly is about 4 METs, cycling 8, running fast 11 or more. A MET is a multiple of resting metabolism. One MET is what your body burns sitting still — conveniently close to 1 kcal per kilogram per hour — so an 8-MET activity burns about eight times your resting rate. A 70 kg person cycling for an hour at 8 METs therefore spends roughly 560 kcal. MET values are population averages, published in reference tables, and your own figures can differ by 20% or more. Fitness, technique, terrain and how hard you actually push all shift the real number, and fitness trackers estimate rather than measure it. Treat the output as a comparison tool between activities, not a precise accounting of the day.

Frequently asked questions
How are calories burned estimated?
With the MET method: intensity × weight × time. Running (MET ~10) burns far more than walking (MET ~3.5).
Is it exact?
No — it is a good estimate; heart rate and fitness change the real figure.
What exactly is a MET?
The metabolic equivalent of task — a multiple of your resting energy use. 1 MET is sitting quietly, roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour; a 5-MET activity burns five times that rate.
