How it works

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100

A tip rewards service, usually as a percentage of the bill. Customs vary a lot: in the United States 15–20% is expected in restaurants, in much of Europe rounding up or 5–10% is normal, and in some countries a service charge is already included and tipping is optional. This calculator gives the tip and the new total, and can split both across a group so everyone pays their fair share without mental math at the table. A common question is whether to tip on the pre-tax or the tax-included amount — most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the total is more generous. When a 'service charge' or 'service compris' already appears on the bill, an extra tip is not expected.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for good service. In many other countries tipping is optional or already included — check the local custom.

How do I split the tip between people?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does it for you when you enter the group size.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or the total?

Conventionally on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the tax-included total is common and simply a little more generous. Either is acceptable.

Is tipping expected everywhere?

No. It is customary in the US and a few countries, optional or minimal in much of Europe, and sometimes already built in as a service charge — check the bill.
