How it works
Average speed is simply the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken. Enter how far you went and how long it took, and the calculator returns the result in three common units: km/h, mph and m/s. This is average speed, not instantaneous speed. If you drove 100 km in 2 hours your average is 50 km/h, even though your speedometer may have read 0 at a red light and 90 on the motorway. The average smooths every stop and burst into a single figure. To convert between units: 1 km/h = 0.621 mph = 0.278 m/s. The calculator does this for you so you can compare a running pace, a car trip and a physics problem on the same scale.

What is the difference between average and instantaneous speed?
Average speed is total distance over total time; instantaneous speed is how fast you are going at one exact moment (what a speedometer shows). This tool computes the average.
How do I convert km/h to mph?
Multiply km/h by 0.621. So 100 km/h is about 62 mph. The calculator shows both automatically.
Does the result account for stops?
Yes — because it uses total elapsed time, any breaks or traffic are already included in the average.
