How it works
This calculator works out how much fuel a trip needs and what it will cost. It multiplies your distance by your vehicle's average consumption to get the litres, then multiplies those litres by the price per litre for the total cost. The consumption figure is the key input. In much of the world it is given as litres per 100 km (L/100km) — a lower number is more efficient. In the US and UK it is often miles per gallon (mpg), where a higher number is better. For a return journey, enter the round-trip distance. Real consumption rises with city traffic, air conditioning, a loaded vehicle and high motorway speeds, so treat the result as a solid estimate rather than an exact figure.

What is the difference between L/100km and mpg?
Both describe fuel efficiency. L/100km measures fuel used over a fixed distance (lower is better); mpg measures distance per unit of fuel (higher is better).
Does the estimate include the return trip?
Only if you enter the round-trip distance. For a there-and-back journey, double the one-way distance.
How can I lower my fuel consumption?
Steady speeds, correct tyre pressure, less weight and gentle acceleration all help. City driving and high-speed motorway cruising both raise consumption.
