How it works

Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)

A discount lowers a price by a percentage. To find the sale price, multiply the original by (1 − rate): a 30% discount on 80 gives 80 × 0.70 = 56, and you save the remaining 24. This calculator shows both the amount you pay and the amount you save, so you can compare deals quickly — a bigger percentage off a smaller item is not always the better saving in absolute terms. Watch out for stacked discounts: they multiply, they do not add. '50% off, then 20% off' is not 70% off — it is 0.5 × 0.8 = 0.40, so you pay 40% of the original and save 60%, not 70%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the sale price after a discount?

Multiply the original price by (1 − discount %). A 30% discount on 50 gives 50 × 0.70 = 35.

How much do I save with a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage. 30% off 50 saves 50 × 0.30 = 15.

How do successive discounts work?

They multiply rather than add. A 20% then a 10% discount leaves you paying 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the price — a 28% total reduction, not 30%.

Is a percentage off always a good deal?

Not necessarily. A large percentage off an inflated price can save less than a small percentage off a fair one — always look at the final price, not just the percentage.
