How it works

kWh = Power(W) ÷ 1000 × hours × days · Cost = kWh × price

This calculator estimates what an appliance costs to run. It multiplies the device's power in kilowatts by the hours it runs and the number of days, giving the energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiplies that by your electricity price per kWh. Appliance power is usually printed on a label or in the manual, in watts (W); divide by 1000 to get kilowatts (1500 W = 1.5 kW). Your price per kWh is on your electricity bill. A 2 kW heater running 5 hours a day for 30 days uses 300 kWh — at a price of 0.20 per kWh that is 60 in energy. Running the numbers this way quickly shows which appliances quietly dominate your bill.
