How it works
The old "multiply by seven" rule is far too crude, because dogs do most of their growing up in the first two years. This calculator uses the widely cited veterinary approach: the first year counts as about 15 human years, the second adds about 9 more, and each year after that adds roughly 5. So a two-year-old dog is already around 24 in human terms, and a five-year-old about 39. The curve is steep then flattens — which matches reality, since a one-year-old dog is sexually mature while a one-year-old child is learning to walk. Size changes everything after maturity. Small breeds age slowly and often reach 15 or 16 years, while giant breeds like Great Danes age fast and may only reach 7 or 8. Any single formula is therefore an approximation; your vet's assessment of a specific dog beats any table.
