How it works

Pace = time ÷ (distance ÷ 100)

Swim pace is expressed as time per 100 metres — the pool equivalent of a runner's minutes per kilometre. Enter your total distance and time and this calculator returns your average pace per 100 m, the universal currency of swim training. Swimmers use per-100 pace because pool workouts are built from repeats of 50, 100, 200 or 400 m: knowing you hold 2:00/100 m makes it trivial to set target times for any set. It also lets you compare a 1500 m session with an 800 m one on equal terms. For reference, casual lap swimmers often sit around 2:30–3:00 per 100 m, trained masters swimmers around 1:30–2:00, and elite freestylers race under 1:00. Open water adds drag from sighting, waves and no push-offs, so expect 5–15 seconds per 100 m slower than in the pool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good 100m pace?

Beginners around 2:30/100m; trained swimmers often under 1:40/100m.

Does pool length matter?

For pace it does not — only total distance and time are used here.

Why is my open-water pace slower than my pool pace?

No walls to push off, sighting breaks your stroke, and waves and currents add drag. A 5–15 s/100 m gap between pool and open water is normal.
