How it works

W/kg = power ÷ body weight

Power-to-weight ratio divides the power you can produce, in watts, by your body mass in kilograms. It is the single most quoted number in cycling because on a climb, gravity taxes every kilogram: two riders putting out 250 W will separate the moment the road tips up if one weighs 62 kg (4.0 W/kg) and the other 78 kg (3.2 W/kg). On flat roads raw watts matter more (aerodynamics dominates), but as gradient increases the sport becomes almost purely W/kg. That is why climbers are light and why the metric predicts climbing performance so well. As rough FTP-based landmarks: recreational riders sit around 2–3 W/kg, strong amateurs 3.5–4.5, and elite professionals above 6 W/kg. Improve the ratio from both ends — raise sustainable power with training, and manage weight sensibly without starving performance.
