How it works
Zakat is the obligatory annual almsgiving of Islam, levied at 2.5% on qualifying wealth held above a threshold. This calculator applies that rate to the net figure you enter. The threshold is the nisab, historically defined as the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Because the two metals have diverged in price, they now give different thresholds; many scholars recommend the silver standard as it is lower and so includes more givers. Wealth below the nisab carries no obligation. What counts is broadly liquid or productive wealth: cash, bank balances, gold and silver, shares, trade goods and money owed to you. Your home, personal car, clothes and tools of your trade are excluded, and immediate debts are deducted before applying the rate. Rulings differ between schools on the details, so use this as an estimate and consult a knowledgeable authority for your own situation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab?
The minimum wealth (based on gold or silver) above which zakat becomes due — check the current value locally.
What wealth is included?
Cash, savings, gold, silver and trade goods — generally not your home or personal-use items.
When is zakat due?
Once a full lunar year — the hawl — has passed with your wealth continuously at or above the nisab. Many people fix a personal date, often in Ramadan, and simply assess their net wealth on that same day each year.
