How it works

VAT = Net × Rate ÷ 100

VAT (value-added tax) is a consumption tax added to the price of most goods and services. It is collected in stages along the supply chain but ultimately paid by the final customer, which is why the price you see on the shelf is often 'VAT included' (TTC). To add VAT, multiply the net price by (1 + rate): 100 at 20% becomes 120. To work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate): 120 ÷ 1.20 gives the 100 net price, and the VAT is the difference. Rates vary widely by country and product — many places use a standard rate around 18–20% with reduced rates on food, books or medicine. Always use the rate that applies to your country and category.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate). For a 20% rate, a net price of 100 becomes 100 × 1.20 = 120.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate). For 20%, a gross price of 120 gives 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net.

Is VAT the same as sales tax?

They are similar consumption taxes but work differently: VAT is collected at each stage of production, while US-style sales tax is charged only once, at the final sale.

What VAT rate should I use?

Use your country and product category’s official rate. Standard rates are often 18–20%, but reduced rates apply to essentials like food or medicine in many countries.
