How it works

Result = value × (from factor ÷ to factor), via grams

Every mass unit here routes through the gram. The metric side is decimal and effortless: 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 tonne = 1,000 kg. The imperial side needs remembering: 1 pound = 453.592 g and 1 ounce = 28.3495 g, with 16 ounces to the pound. The handiest mental shortcuts are 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb and 1 lb ≈ 0.45 kg. So 70 kg is about 154 lb, and a 5 lb bag is roughly 2.27 kg. For cooking, 100 g ≈ 3.5 oz is the anchor that makes European recipes usable with American measuring scales. One caution: the "ton" is ambiguous. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, a US short ton is 907 kg, and a UK long ton is 1,016 kg — a difference big enough to matter in shipping. And strictly speaking these are units of *mass*, not weight: your mass is identical on the Moon, your weight is not.
