Three scales dominate temperature. Celsius pins 0 to freezing water and 100 to boiling water. Fahrenheit, used in the US, puts those same events at 32 and 212. Kelvin starts at absolute zero — the coldest possible temperature — and climbs in Celsius-sized steps: K = °C + 273.15. The Celsius–Fahrenheit conversion is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and back °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The offset of 32 is what trips people up — the two scales even cross at −40°, the one temperature that reads the same in both.
