How it works

Every area conversion here routes through the square metre, so any pair can be linked: square centimetres and kilometres on the metric side, square feet, acres and hectares on the customary and agricultural ones. The metric relations follow from squaring the length ones, which is where intuition often fails. A square metre is 10,000 cm², not 100, because both sides were multiplied by 100. A hectare is 10,000 m² — a square of 100 m by 100 m — and a square kilometre is 100 hectares. On the other side, an acre is 4,047 m², historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day, which is why it is not a round number in any modern unit. Land in much of the world is quoted in hectares, in the English-speaking world in acres, and the ratio between them is about 2.47 acres per hectare.
