How it works

Every volume conversion here routes through the litre, so any pair of units can be linked: millilitres, centilitres, cubic centimetres and cubic metres on the metric side, gallons, pints and fluid ounces on the imperial and US ones. The metric side is effortless because it is decimal: 1 litre = 1,000 ml = 1,000 cm³, and 1 m³ = 1,000 litres. That last equality is worth memorising — it converts a tank's dimensions straight into a capacity. The traps are all on the customary side. A US gallon is 3.785 litres while an imperial gallon is 4.546 — a 20% difference on the same word. A US pint is 473 ml, a UK pint 568 ml. And a US fluid ounce is 29.6 ml, so a recipe's "cup" of 240 ml is not the 250 ml a European cook would assume.
