How it works

US ≈ EU − 33, UK ≈ EU − 34

Shoe size systems measure different things, which is why conversion is only ever approximate. The European scale is based on Paris points (two-thirds of a centimetre), while the UK and US scales use inch-based increments from different zero points — hence the rough rules US ≈ EU − 33 and UK ≈ EU − 34. The result is that a converted size gets you close, not exact. Two brands quoting the same EU number can differ by a full size, because the number describes the last (the mould the shoe is built on) as much as the foot, and lasts vary between manufacturers and between models. Treat the conversion as a starting point, then check the brand's own chart — most publish the insole length in centimetres, which is far more reliable than any size number. Note also that men's and women's US sizes are offset by roughly 1.5, a discrepancy that does not exist in the EU system.

Frequently asked questions

Are these sizes exact?

They are standard approximations — brands differ, so treat the result as a starting point.

Do they work for women?

These offsets are for men’s sizing; women’s charts use different numbers.

How do I measure my foot in centimetres?

Stand on a sheet of paper, heel against a wall, and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure heel to mark, do both feet and keep the larger, and add about 0.5–1 cm of ease. Measure in the evening, when feet are largest.
