How it works
In physics, work is force applied over a distance: W = F × d, measured in joules. Push with 50 newtons over 3 metres and you have done 150 J of work — which is also exactly how much energy you transferred to the object. The subtlety is direction: only the component of force along the movement counts. Push a crate horizontally and all your force does work; push at an angle and only part of it does. Push against a wall that does not budge and, in the physics sense, you have done no work at all — however exhausted you feel. Holding a heavy box motionless is the classic example. Your muscles burn energy, but the box does not move, so W = F × 0 = 0 joules of mechanical work. The energy you spend goes into the repeated micro-contractions of muscle fibres, not into the object.
