How it works

P = force ÷ area

Pressure is force spread over area: P = F ÷ A, measured in pascals (one newton per square metre). Press with 100 N on 0.01 m² and you produce 10,000 Pa, or 10 kPa. The area in the denominator is what makes pressure so counterintuitive. The same force concentrated on a small area produces enormous pressure — which is why a drawing pin pushes into wood under thumb force, while the same hand pressing flat does nothing. Snowshoes work the other way: identical weight, much larger area, so you no longer sink. The pascal is a small unit, so real quantities appear with prefixes: atmospheric pressure is about 101 kPa, car tyres run around 220 kPa, and a deep dive reaches megapascals. Blood pressure keeps its own historical unit, the millimetre of mercury, purely by medical convention.
