How it works
Power is the rate of doing work: P = W ÷ t, in watts. Lift a load requiring 1,000 joules in 10 seconds and you deliver 100 W; do the same job in 2 seconds and you deliver 500 W. The work is identical — the power is five times greater. That distinction is the whole point. Energy tells you how much was done; power tells you how fast. A cyclist and a car can both climb the same hill (same work against gravity), but the car does it in a fraction of the time because it delivers far more power. The unit honours James Watt, and it is the same watt as in electricity — mechanical and electrical power are interchangeable measures of the same physical quantity, which is exactly why an electric motor rated at 1 kW can replace 1 kW of muscle or steam. For reference, a fit human sustains roughly 100–200 W over long efforts.
