How it works
A weighted average multiplies each value by its weight (coefficient), adds those products, then divides by the total of the weights. It's the standard way schools compute a term average when subjects don't count equally.
How it works
A weighted average gives some values more influence than others. Instead of treating every number equally, each is multiplied by a weight, the products are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. It is the right tool whenever items don't count equally. A course grade where the exam is worth 50% and homework 20%, a portfolio return across holdings of different sizes, or an average price across purchases of different quantities all call for a weighted average, not a plain one. If every weight is the same, the weighted average collapses back to the ordinary (arithmetic) mean. The bigger the spread in weights, the more the heavily weighted values pull the result toward themselves.
