MMXXIV

How it works

I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000

Roman numerals build every number from seven symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Reading is additive from left to right when values descend — MMXXIV starts with 2000, adds 20, then 4. The twist is subtractive notation: a smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted. IV is 4, IX is 9, XL is 40, XC is 90, CD is 400 and CM is 900 — only these six pairs are standard. That is why 2024 is MMXXIV and not MMXXIIII. The system has no zero and no fractions, and standard notation stops at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX) because there is no ordinary symbol above M. Romans numerals survive today on clock faces, in the names of monarchs and popes, in book chapters, film sequels and Super Bowl editions.

Frequently asked questions

How is 2024 written in Roman numerals?

MMXXIV (2000 + 20 + 4).

Why the 1–3999 limit?

Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M (1000), so they stop at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX).

Why do many clocks show IIII instead of IV?

Tradition. Clockmakers have long used IIII on dials — often explained by visual balance with the VIII on the opposite side. Outside clock faces, IV is the standard form.
