How it works

Area = (d₁ × d₂) ÷ 2

A rhombus is a quadrilateral with four equal sides — a square that has been pushed over. Its area is elegantly simple from the diagonals: A = (d₁ × d₂) ÷ 2. With diagonals of 8 and 6, the area is 24. The halving comes from a property of the rhombus: its diagonals cross at right angles and cut each other exactly in half. That splits the shape into four identical right triangles, and the formula is just their combined area. The same perpendicular bisection gives the side length via Pythagoras: each side is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs d₁/2 and d₂/2, so side = √((d₁/2)² + (d₂/2)²) — here √(16+9) = 5. Note that every square is a rhombus (one with equal diagonals), but a rhombus is only a square when its angles are right.
