How it works

Area = (3√3 / 2) × side²

A regular hexagon has six equal sides and six equal angles of 120°. Its area is (3√3 / 2) × side², and its perimeter simply six times the side. With a side of 10, the area is about 259.8 and the perimeter 60. The formula comes from a neat property: a regular hexagon splits into exactly six identical equilateral triangles meeting at the centre. Multiply one equilateral triangle's area (√3/4 × side²) by six and you get the coefficient 3√3/2. That structure is why the hexagon rules nature and engineering. It tiles a plane with no gaps while enclosing the most area for the least perimeter of any such tiling — minimum wall for maximum room. Bees exploit it to save wax, and it reappears in floor tiles, bolt heads, graphene and carbon-fibre webs.
