How it works

Volume = π·r²·h

A cylinder is a circle given height: its volume is the circle's area times how tall it stands, V = π·r²·h. The total surface combines two circular caps and the side wall unrolled into a rectangle: S = 2πr² + 2πr·h. Because the radius is squared and the height is not, the two inputs are not equal players. Doubling the height doubles the volume, but doubling the radius quadruples it — a wide tank holds far more than a tall one of the same material. The formula prices everyday containers: a can of radius 3.3 cm and height 11.5 cm holds π × 3.3² × 11.5 ≈ 393 cm³ — the familiar 33 cl. Water tanks, pipes, silos and drums all answer to the same three symbols.
