How it works
The mole is chemistry's counting unit, and molar mass is the bridge between counting and weighing: mass = moles × molar mass, in grams per mole. Two moles of water (molar mass 18 g/mol) weigh 36 g. To find a molar mass, add up the atomic masses in the formula from the periodic table. Water H₂O is 2×1.008 + 15.999 ≈ 18.02 g/mol; table salt NaCl is 22.99 + 35.45 ≈ 58.44 g/mol; carbon dioxide CO₂ is 12.01 + 2×16.00 ≈ 44.01 g/mol. This conversion is the daily bread of the lab, because balances weigh grams while reactions consume moles in whole-number ratios. Every solution preparation and every reaction yield starts by turning a mole quantity into a mass you can actually weigh out.
